Before the weather gets unbearably hot (as we know it will in the TX summer) get outside with your toddler or preschooler and go on a fun family picnic! While the idea of having small children in wide open spaces may sound too exhausting, you can eliminate some of the stress with good planning. Anytime you leave the house with your kiddos, a great rule of thumb is to keep the outing as simple as possible. Cramming too many activities into one afternoon can lead to grumpy children and an exhausted mom.

    1. Location, Location, Location – When deciding where to picnic start by doing it at a familiar place. You could even start in your own backyard or at a friend’s house. Being familiar with your surroundings will give you peace of mind to be able to enjoy yourself. Once your kids are older or whenever you are more comfortable, venture out to a local park or zoo for your picnic festivities.

    2. Bring a Friend – Children almost always do better when they have friends to play with. Even introverted children appreciate the company of another child to play with outside. Being outside is the perfect place to spark imagination so having a friend explore with your child makes it even more fun! Plus, having another adult to watch the kiddos means you will have a chance to talk to a grown-up and have another set of eyes looking out for your child as you look after theirs.

An Easter Egg Hunt can be a fun event for the whole family, but did you know it can also be an educational opportunity for your child? Here are six creative ways your child can learn through an egg hunt:

    1.Toddlers Can Learn Colors

Before letting your toddler loose to find as many plastic eggs as possible, tell your toddler only to collect a specific color or colors of eggs. This will help your toddler distinguish between different colors and make the game more challenging!

    2.Toddlers Can Learn Shapes

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, fill plastic eggs with different shaped objects. After the eggs are all found, reward your child for naming each of the shapes found in his or her eggs.

    3.Preschoolers Can Learn Numbers

If you’re creating your own egg hunt, use a permanent marker to number the plastic eggs before hiding them. Challenge your children to find the eggs in order from 1 to 20, or 1 to 100 if you’re that ambitious!

For the rest of the ways your child can learn through an egg hunt, read the full article here: What Your Child Can Learn From An Easter Egg Hunt

Is your child’s back talking becoming a problem? Are you tired of hearing “No! You do it!” from your toddler or preschooler? There may be something you can do to help curb those annoying, whiny, temper tantrums.

Instead of responding by saying “You’ll do it because I said so” or “Don’t ever talk to me like that!” there are other ways to help your child learn to disagree with you respectfully. The best way to stop back talk is to provide your child with some independence – but within your own limits. Kids of all ages need a sense of personal power to make their own choices and express their differences in opinions with parents. When parents make all the decisions for them, children naturally want to lash out, and so they do — with words and sometimes, physical aggression.

So how can parents teach their children to disagree respectfully? Read the full article here: How to Stop Back Talking Without "Because I Said So"

You want the best for your child, so you may be researching and seeking information and techniques about how to provide the most nurturing environment for your child’s growth and development. Attachment parenting is a more recent technique and here, at Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Cypress, Texas, we discuss how you can utilize this technique for better infant care.

    The Baby B’s

This term has been coined to promote easy memory of the various steps of attachment parenting, beginning from just after the birth of your child and going on through the teenage years. There are seven practices that support attachment parenting.

Birth-bonding: The first couple of hours after your child is born are vital in developing a healthy bond with your child.

Belief in your child’s cry: It is completely natural for a child to cry. Infants cry as a form of communication, and you need to be attuned to the different cries of your infant to understand his or her different needs.

Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding is one of the easiest and most natural forms of child care bonding. Bottle feeding can also be effective if breastfeeding is not an option.

Balance and boundaries: Balance refers to parents and the need for a parent to take of of personal needs and the marriage, if applicable. The teaching of boundaries applies once your child grows beyond infancy. Through teaching and being firm on what is right and wrong a child learns how to be behave properly, and this can promote a healthy parent-child relationship.

  • Cypress Child Care Tips: Why your child’s environment matters to early brain development

At birth, your child’s brain is filled with about 100 billion brain cells, all ready and waiting to form the neural connections. These are necessary for learning, playing sports and forming relationships. Known as plasticity, this state allows your child to learn at an incredible rate. It is a transitory state. After the age of five, your child’s brain structure becomes less plastic and more permanent, making learning more challenging.

During this window of opportunity while the brain is highly plastic, stimulation of the senses is important to the learning process. The senses of touch, taste, smell, sight and sound are stimulated through a variety of age-appropriate activities that encourage brain development during this critical period.

How to ensure your child’s environment supports brain development

    • Safety: A childproof environment allows your child to explore independently, but supervised, without facing the risk of trauma. A child’s safe, stress-free environment effectively opens up new learning experiences and builds confidence.
    • Variety: Different kinds of stimulation activate different parts of your child’s brain. By offering a selection of toys and games that appeal to each sense, your child will experience optimal cognitive, language, social-emotional and physical development.
    • Trust: When your child feels loved and free of stress, a bond of trust with you and other caregivers is developed. Trusting you and your intentions, your child is more open to new knowledge and challenges, allowing a child to experience the necessary stimulation with confidence. Consistently responding quickly and positively to your infant’s needs is the best way to help develop this bond.

Tablets are fast becoming one of the best ways to improve literacy and number skills in preschoolers. You can supplement your child’s preschool education with a number of excellent apps that have been developed specifically for preschool age children. Below are some of the benefits to your preschooler when using a tablet to learn:

Tablets make learning fun and exciting

Tablets have stunning visuals, fascinating sounds and interactivity that appeal to three of the five senses - touch, sight and sound. This makes learning using one of these devices a lot more appealing than reading a book or learning from a video.

    Thousands of apps are available

Today there are literally thousands of educational apps, many of them focused on building and improving number, math and literacy skills. These apps are usually inexpensive or even free and because of the sheer volume available, you will find several that your child will enjoy. Be sure to choose age and developmentally appropriate apps.

    Learn on the go

Educational apps on a tablet make any long trip more enjoyable for your child. He or she will be engaged and learning, giving you time to focus on your travel arrangements and logistics.

    Other benefits

Some studies have shown that the use of tablets in preschool offers significant gains in language and communication skills. There are also studies that show that children who use tablets and computers at home have better reading and math skills. Apps can help your child learn the alphabet, how to read and how to spell. They can also help build fine motor skills and encourage imagination.

Your infant eating solid foods for the first time is an exciting milestone! Now, your child is not just relying on breastfeeding or formula to receive all the essential nutrients. So what solid foods will give your child the best and healthiest start?

    • Iron fortified cereal: Child care specialists recommend that your child starts taking in iron in order to supplement brain development at around five to six months of age. This nutrient plays an important role in ensuring that your infant’s system gets plenty of oxygen and helps prevent anemia.
    • Strawberries and blueberries: These foods are full of antioxidants that protect the brain from wear and tear. Mashed berries in some Greek yogurt will make a tasty brain-boosting treat.
    • Eggs: Eggs and egg yolks especially, are rich in choline, a nutrient essential for brain growth and for the development of healthy memory function. It is also present in tofu, beans, broccoli and cauliflower. You can serve a warm scrambled egg for breakfast or steamed, mashed vegetables for lunch or dinner.
    • Greek yogurt, lean beef and spinach: These foods are rich in protein, the building blocks for your child’s brain and body. A yogurt snack, pureed beef or vegetables will give your infant plenty of protein for a healthy, growing body.
    • Whole-grain pasta/rice: Whole-grains are complex carbohydrates that help stabilize your child’s energy levels and fuel the brain. Soft, cooked pasta and rice make the perfect base for your child’s lunch or dinner.

If you are looking for a great source of fresh, local produce, visit The Farmers Market at Bridgeland. With everything from fruits and vegetables to flowers, honey, cheese and bread, you will find everything you need for your family’s needs.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Cypress, we offer an innovative early development infant program for children from the age of six weeks and up. We encourage children to explore through supervised hands-on, sensory play. Our classrooms are fully childproofed and offer your infant bright colors, music, story time, and playtime with peers.

  • Childcare advice: How summer camps in Cypress, Texas meet the developmental needs of children

childcare_cypress_tx.jpgAs a parent, you want your child to grow into a healthy, well-balanced adolescent and adult. Summer camps led by childcare specialists focus on achieving these goals through activities that emphasize teamwork, healthy social interaction, problem solving and play.

To prepare your child for their summer camp experience, you might want to spend a day at Gymboree Play & Music. This is an excellent way to introduce him or her to some of the activities they will participate in at camp while building their confidence and helping them express their natural creativity. With over 30 years of experience in teaching children, Gymboree is the ideal place for your children to enjoy activities that are an excellent prelude to summer camp.

Children's developmental needs and how summer camp can help meet them:

    • Structure and limitations: Children need to learn that no matter where they go, there are rules and limitations to be observed. Summer camp provides children with an understanding of the importance of these structures in a safe and secure environment.

    • Self-definition: The wide variety of activities at summer camp allows children to express their needs for self-definition and discovery. The camp environment is designed to give every child an opportunity to fill different leadership and team roles, and help ignite new interests and abilities outside of a traditional academic space.

    • Self-expression: Children need to learn how and when to express themselves according to different situations. Camp allows them to do this in a supervised environment where healthy social interaction, creativity and competition are encouraged.

    • Social interactions: In order for your child to have a healthy perspective on the world, they need to experience plenty of positive social interaction. Our summer camp program supports building friendships based on respect, values and acceptance of others.

    • Physical activity. Children need physical activity in order to develop motor skills and refine sports talent. When children are in a camp environment, they are free to discover themselves and gain an appreciation for their surroundings. They also learn to appreciate the benefits of physical fitness and overall health.

    • Competence. Children need to learn about trust, and responsibilities and decisions. Activities that require leadership and teamwork help to develop these skills and abilities.

    • Participation. Children need to learn the importance of teamwork and that each contribution is valued. This is achieved through physical and creative group challenges like putting on a play or completing an obstacle course.

A summer camp environment is uniquely designed to foster developmental needs through stimulating fun and age-specific activities, which can supplement what children learn at school and home.

At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Cypress, Texas, our goal is to maximize a child's developmental growth though a fun and diverse set of activities. At camp, these activities include exploring nature, experiencing fun indoor and outdoor learning activities, and being physically active. By supporting the individual needs of children in a loving and nurturing environment, we can help them develop a greater appreciation for nature, build positive memories and develop exciting new skills.

If you would like to find out more about our summer camp or would like to enroll your child, please contact us today.
